What is your name and what do you do?
I’m Claire Yanta-O’Mahoney, Founder + Trainer of Fleur de Lis Fitness which offers personal training, small group training, and healthy lifestyle nutrition coaching to clients locally, live online via Skype/FaceTime, and on-demand personalized YouTube workouts. Basically, I can train you no matter where you are 🙂
Are there any childhood experiences that led you to where you are today?
My parents raised my brother, sister, and me in a very active household where we participated in our favorite sports, cooked often at home, indulged often but didn’t overindulge, and tried new foods. I don’t recall my parents warning us to think about the calories in foods, trying to work off rich treats, or feeling like we needed to be aware of our weight. Instead, we practiced mindfulness eating and this is something we continue today.
How did you get started in your current field today? And where did that passion come from?
Fitness, nutrition, and health were always topics that I researched, talked about, and wanted to be involved in for as long as I can remember. When I decided that I wanted to have a stronger positive influence on others, it became apparent to me (and to many others) that I should step away from corporate America and pursue my dreams. With the encouragement of my husband, parents, siblings, and friends, Fleur de Lis Fitness was born. My passion came from the desire to connect with others and make a difference in their lives for the better.
Who do you look at as inspiration to keep going?
I love when clients tell me that they haven’t felt this good in years, or they’ve never felt this good. Hearing that positive praise is music to my ears!
What makes you stand apart from everyone else in your field?
I take a very balanced approach to fitness, nutrition, and health. Many people view things from the “light switch” perspective, either they’re on the wagon doing everything perfectly or they’re completely off it, feeling stuck in a more negative space. I like to teach my clients how to practice discipline but still enjoy themselves.
What tangible piece of advice would you give young girls who want to be where you are?
Believe in yourself, seek advice and support from those you trust, and keep moving forward. The hardest part is getting started.
What do you love most about being a woman?
I love how I feel….strong, feminine, capable, soft, empathetic….as a woman I think we are allowed to feel and personify more emotions than men. One day I hope men are as free as we are!
What is your most memorable moment as a personal trainer?
When my very first client told me that she noticed muscle tone, more energy, better sleep, and a better overall sense of self. That was a memorable and winning feeling!
What is your least memorable moment as a personal trainer?
When a client told me she had hit a plateau. Instead of calling it a day and throwing in the towel, we discussed what she did the other 23 hours of the day when she wasn’t training with me, including getting detailed about her eating habits. By identifying areas that could be improved upon, she made some little changes that resulted in success. She now looks and feels better than ever!
Are there any struggles being a woman in your field?
I hate to admit it, but I struggle with the cliché of the female personal trainer. There are many of us out there, but most of us have worked hard, are educated, and care deeply about our clients’ success.
What is one thing many people do not know about you?
There’s a very quiet side to me. I can be really bubbly, energetic, and talkative, but I also enjoy having time alone, whether that include reading, cooking, errands, or beach time. I’ve dabbled in meditation and want to get more into it! It’s all about balance, a mix of energetic and low-key 🙂
Our fun question: If you could be any animal what would it be and why?
I would be a bird because one of my favorite things is seeing the world from above. Everything is instantly beautiful! Plus traffic would be an non-issue 🙂
What does the future hold for you?
The ability to reach more clients and help them feel their best through more robust training programs.
